Default dual exhaust for non-turbo questions!

I have a 1989 2.3 Mustang LX non-turbo, and i really want to get dual exhaust and have a nice sound as well. What would be be best: one glasspack muffler right after the cat, then a split into two pipes? or a split of the pipe into two right after the cat, and then two glasspack mufflers near the end? (im probably going to use 2 1/4" pipes with 3" wide tips)

also, I read somewhere that right after the catylitic converter is the best place to put the muffler because of something with acoustics, is this true?

bonus question! haha what would be the best kind of muffler to use? please be specific

-Thanks! Taylor

do you have to leave the cat on because of your local laws or is it a personal preference? if possible remove it... you'll get a much better sound without it. I would put on 1 glasspack and then the duals. if you have a split and then 2 glasspacks the exhaust flow wont be consistant through both mufflers since it would be going from single to dual. also i would think about going with something different than a glasspack like a flowmaster, magnaflow, dynomax, borla, etc. they will give off a much better (deeper tone) sound than a $15 glasspack... ive heard several 2.3l with glasspacks and it makes them sound like **** (in my opinion) ive also heard one with a borla muffler on it (ranger) and it sounded good for a 4 bangger(in my opinion). good luck with what ever route you choose... hope this helps. cheers, mullikin

yeah in virginia you have to have at least one catylitic converter on :/, but thanks i was leaning towards the single muffler but i never thought of the uneven exhaust flow, so im definitely going with one muffler and then duals! but how would i know what muffler to use that would sound good, there's soo many!

If you are putting a custom dual exhaust on you may be in line to hear some irregularities on idle. I have one on my 86 4 banger and it does sound nice. No cat converter needed here in Indiana and I have a cherrybomb on mine. I believe the previous owner actually put it on backwards to prevent it from being too too loud. Occassionaly when idling you can hear a slight extra little pop from where the exhaust is hitting the split. I am a bit amused by it myself. Good luck though, and the look of it will most likely impress you.

try a borla or magnaflow... they both have a very distictive sound of their own and sound great on everything ive heard them on. im sure you'll love the sound of em... anythings gotta sound better than a glasspack...(glasspacks remind me of old chevy & ford 4x4's cuz they all have those and the ever so sweet echo-tips... haha!) a nice muffler is alot more expensive than a glasspack, but you'll probally never have to replace it (not anytime soon anyways). oh... they'll look a hell of alot better too when ya peep up underneith the old stang too . good luck with it man

I thought about dual exaust. Me I can remove the cat I was gonna split it into dual and back to one where the cat would be then run a glasspack. You could also buy a single in dual out muffler and use that to split the pipes. I was thinking of using a large exaust piping and a 350Z/Porsche style muffler.
I forgot to add that atleast with I guess 79-86 the 2.3 exaust is rescessed(sp?) into the body kinda. 1 idea I had for my S10 Blazer I used to have was cause with a 4.3 it had a single pipe and most vehicles have special cross members for duals was to split it shortly after the header/manifold and both down the same side.
