Default 1991 Mustang, distributorless ignition system swap?

does anyone know if it's possible to use the dis system (1 coil pack) from a 91 - 93 mustang and install it and the cam/crank sensor on a 87 block but still keep the 87 ecm??? thinking about using the dis with the 87 turbo swap and i'd like to keep the turbo ecm. i won't need both coil packs, i'm not sure it the crank sensor is adaptable to a 87 block, the cam sensor runs off the dizzy gear, and i'm not sure if the ecm has different programming to read it.

This is a good question. I once saw a 2.3 Turbo with the 8 plug head and the DIS setup. From what I have been told, the crank sensor sends the same signal to the computer as the hall effect sensor/ TFI module does. Also, from what I have been told, the wiring can be modified to work with the DIS system. Don't know about only using 1 coil pack though. Again, can't say it's the truth, but I've seen some hybrid setups running.

i know about the hall effect sensor, i'm worried there's nowhere to mount the crank sensor on the block. and i know the secondary coil is only for emission's, but is the ecm programmed to detect the crank sensor, or is the module under the hood the main brain of the operation.

I think all of the DIS setups I had seen were running the 91-93 blocks come to think of it. The DIS system works the same as the TFI system. You have something that senses crank position, you have an ignition module, and you have something that fires the plugs. In both systems, the ignition module receives a crank signal and sends it to the computer. The computer responds with an advance signal to the module and the module fires the plugs through some type of coil accordingly.

that is right, but how is the crank sensor mounted and where does it wire to?

I think because of how the crank sensor mounts you would almost have to use the 91-93 block. Like I said, all the DIS setups that I have seen use these blocks. Most likely because of the mount needed. As for where it wires, it would wire in to the DIS ignition module. It takes the place of the hall effect sensor in a distributor ignition.
