Default 1992 lx Mustang 2.3l.. tranny shifting funny

Just when I thought I had most of the mechanicals ready and was fixing to pick out some colors.........my tranny starts shifting funky.

After it warms up, when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd, it gains rpm and really takes its time about shifting. Goes into a slip mode. I can let up on the throttle and it will go ahead and shift. When it is in gear, it pulls fine and no sign of slippage.

Any idea guys?

I have never rebuilt an auto tranny...........but there is always the first time.

Before you go trying any thing drastic like a tranny swap CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID. The fluid needs to be changed every 60K miles give or take. The Filter kits are cost under $20 at any autopart store and come with a filter and gasket. This could easily be your problem.

Unbolt the transmission oil pan and the filter should be right there. Flat thing with a tube that goes up into the transmission (buy a kit first and you'll know what the filter looks like and how it fits in place). Should be a painless job that can be done in the driveyard, draining the fluid is kind of messing cause there is no drain plug for it. Refill fluid through transmission dipstick with a small funnel (weird way but standard across the auto industry)

I'm sorry, I failed to mention in my orginal post that I had changed the tranny fluid about 4 mos ago and havent put that many miles on it since. But, I am going to change the fluid and filter before I go pulling the tranny. I have a 9000lb angle lift abd tranny jack so even if I have to pull the tranny its no big deal. I was just hoping for a quick fix.

Anybody ever use that Lucas tranny stop leak/fix stuff?

Check your vacuum lines for transmission fluid. Your modulator could be failing/failed

Maybe 20PSI, new computer, new 3" VAM, and some porting will make it faster

Default A4LD tranny overhaul

OK, here's the story.

The problem: Engine over rev on 2-3 up-shift.

Cause: Busted intermediate servo piston.
A4LD Busted Servo Piston Pictures - A4LD Busted Servo Piston Photos - Mustang Picture Gallery - AllFordMustangs.com

I couldnt stand it anymore and decided what the heck and pulled the tranny. I went to DACCO in Chattanooga, bought an A4LD repair manual, and proceded to tear the tranny down. I had never overhauled an auto tranny before but have worked on anything from a weedeater to a C-5 and I had a good book and a good parts lady. She was awesome. At first, I just went and got seals and bands because that was all I saw was the intermediate band was worn a little. After returning to the shop and begining to replace seals, I tore apart the intermediate servo, and WAH-LA.....busted servo piston!

I returned to DACCO and placed the busted servo on the counter and the parts lady said......"hmmmmmmmmm....Mustang...A4LD..having 2-3 up-shift problems."

I looked around at some of the guys in the store and said..."Yeah, what kind of problems?"

Over her shoulder heading to the parts bin she replied "Engine over rev"

"Are you married?" I asked.

"Yeah, and so are you!" she laughed........and so did everyone else in the place. One guy in there said she gets two to three proposals a day.

Back at the shop, following the manual closely and of course a couple of phone calls to my parts lady, I put the tranny back together.

To my suprise, it works and works very sweetly. Now, I am not scared of auto trannies..........esp the infamous A4LD!

If any of you have tranny problems, you can private message me and I will look in the manual for it has a killer troubleshooting guide.
