Default Power steering fluid

Hi, I was going to change my power steering fluid on my 1990 mustang 2.3 because it has never been changed in 100,000 miles. I was wondering what kind of fluid to put in - Power steering fluid or ATF. I have heard a lot of debate on this in the past. The fluid in there is so black I can't even tell what it was. I heard if you put the wrong fluid in you can ruin seals. I don't want to mess it up, so I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. Thanks in advance, Tim

TYPE F automatic transmission fluid is what is supposed to go in there. If it's black, it sounds like there may be some seal damage. With any luck, you've caught it before it becomes an issue. I would maybe buy 2 or 3 bottles and change it out a few times to get the old nasty fluid out of the system.

i agree, flush it out good with the trans. fluid....then i suggest to fill it with a synthetic fluid ,like royal purple,etc....

Okay, I'll go buy some type F auto trans fluid and start to change it out.
