Default A/c sometimes Screeches at idle

I recently fixed the wiring on my a/c and recharged it. It hasn't been used for years until now. It works great and holds its charge but sometimes when I'm at idle at a light or parked it screeches. When I start driving it stops. Does anyone know what the problem is and is it an easy fix?

Belts usually screech when they are too loose and sometimes when they get wet. Usually if the screech goes away when RPMs increase it is a belt issue. Tighten it or check your tensioner if it has one.

yea my dads car would do that... theres a small hose that tends to get clogged; the a/c will screech if the hose gets clogged. try flicking the hose with your finger to let the water out; if that doesnt work use a pipe cleaner, and if that doesnt work... its probably the belt... good luck!

Default Cooling Fan

Also check to make sure that your radiator cooling fan is coming on. It should always be on when the AC is on. If it does not come on, the condensor overheats and the compressor tends to lock up making the belt squeal. Increasing the RPM/speed moves more air across the condensor and cools it down some. There are several things that can make the fan fail to come on, so you may have to do some troubleshooting to figure out what is wrong. In the meantime,TEMPORARILY wire the fan directly to the battery and see if the squealing stops.

yeah that must be the problem since I already have the fan on a toggle switch. I usually just turn it on once it reaches a certain temp. Now that I think about it I don't remember it locking up when the fan is on. Thanks!!
