Default anyone done a msd box on the 2.3?

i was curious to as if anyone has done this on the 2.3L? im looking to gain a little pep and i heard it would increase my m.p.g a little. i ordered the msd blaster box since its only a 4 cyl. am i going to need to change the coil as well? im currently using 8mm wires and platinum plugs. also a exhaust question i want to free up some of the flow but dont want to loose to much back pressure to make it run poorly. any ideas on this as well?
thanks,
john

I'm curious to know about this too. I've done a good amount of work to my 2.3 and think that this would help more.

I am running an MSD 6A box on my 86 Capri. It has the carbed 2.3L and it had the stupid computer controlled carb with TFI ignition. I removed the computer system and used a Duraspark magnetic pickup distributor. The MSD box was truly plug-and-play. There is a Duraspark distributor harness adapter and a TFI coil adapter available so everything just plugged in. The thing I notice, especially with a carburetted engine, is the fact that your fuel mix does not need to be as precise and it runs very well. The multiple spark discharge ensures better combustion of the fuel. I don't know how much of an advantage there would be on one of the 87-90 EFI cars but I could see it at least adding better throttle response and better fuel economy. If you have a TFI coil, you can use it. I would not use one of the old round Duraspark coils though. They can't take the demand of the multiple spark output.

I was curious to the Crank fire ignition that I think esslinger sells to convert it to a distributorless system

I don't know if that would be best for what you will be using your car for. That ignition system is made for race 2.3L engines. It has a fixed (not based on vacuum) timing curve. It is adjustable, but it would be overkill for your engine. It is also VERY expensive. The MSD box would be much more suited to your needs and also much less expensive.

What duraspark system would be best for a modded carbed 2.3? and do they make a distributor for it?

Duraspark is what you have now. It's a great system. You have a magnetic pickup in your distributor that sends a signal to your duraspark box, which fires the coil. Very simple. If you're looking for an MSD system, the 6A box would be plenty.

I'm running an MSD 6A with an older Ranger distributor with vacuum advance and a stock coil. Works well. Real easy to start.

Here's a link to a cool 2.3L that had an MSD ignition system and a lot of other mods. I thought this guy Adam had a lot of good ideas. I love Mustangs no matter what size engine they're born with. They're still FORD MUSTANGS! AdamJ's 2.3L Mustang Web Site
