Default A quick check

A quick check to see if the fan is working is turn the ac on. the computer should turn the fan on to cool the engine. if not, you may have something wrong in the fan circuit.

Your fan motor my be wore out. I had to replace mine last week because of the same problem. I was setting out in the street talking to my neighbor and I had the car idling and it overheated. Luckily I wasn't far from home. but I would let it get about half temp on the gauge and then go and check the plug to see if power is coming out. If so then your fan motor is warn out.

What year car are we talking?

And the post by Duel is right on. The AC should make the fan run in auto

Pull the plug off the fann and use jumper wires to connect directly to the battery. That should tell whether the fan is bad.

I just had this problem on my 1990. The fan kicks on at 220. The needle goes to the "O" on NORMAL. My mechanic hooked up a real thermostat and it kicked on right at 220, but the temp gauge was at the "O" which is kind of makes the engine seem hotter than it is. Just let it idle and the fan should kick on about 220. Don't worry about it getting 220 degrees because normal operating temp is 195 and these engines are cast iron and so are the heads so they can take more heat than aluminum.
