i have yet to really see any bottom end besides the ability to start rolling, but my powerband seems to lie around 2500 - 4500 rpms.

pull out the air silencer should help a little you can peal out one tire if you do gives it a little more torque and hp.

i know that the intake is a bit of the issue, but do try and remember that the 2.3L was an economy move not for performance at any median. i dont know so much about a rear ended feeling but i know mine does kinda just go all the sudden when that hits that sweet spot. Maybe its all just a tunning issue that was factory setting and yours might just be off a tad. I know 9 out of 10 cars can be retuned only and gain quite a bit of power. One of my friends had his stock car dyno tuned ( timing, fuel pressure / delivery, ect) and gained over 40 wheel horse power! Dyno proven as well. I will look into this and get back on it.

Loose the intake silencer if you have one it has a real small Diameter tube inside. A racerwalch header and a cam would help mileage and power and all can be done with out removing the engine.
also think about a post 90 computer and maf the whole thing could be done for around 500.00 bucks. If your a good shopper.
