Question why the backfire?

my lx 2.3 sometimes backfires and completly shuts off. why does it do this has anyone had this problem before?? it did it every now and then but now its doing it all the time and its really not cool when it backfires and everyone looks at you funny.

Check the timing belt,is it stretched real bad?How are the plugs and wires?

i would also check the fuel setup, it sounds like maybe it runs really rich from time to time, that could make it backfire and could flood it out. But i agree to check the timing first.

the plugs and wires are new just put them in a month ago.ill check that belt and see whats up.
