Default 90 2.3 compression test results...

Had time tonight to test a couple of engines I have. I bought a 5 speed donor coupe to swap the T5 over into my A4LD vert. I thought I would test the donor motor so that maybe I could leave the trannie attached and swap over the entire engine/tranny combo. Well, after these results I think I'll keep the vert motor in place and just swap trannies. Here's the results...

90 2.3 coupe 94k miles (might be 194k)
cyl1- 140
cyl2- 123
cyl3- 160
cyl4- 169

90 2.3 vert 104k miles
cyl1- 186
cyl2- 183
cyl3- 175
cyl4- 169

Both cars have the rad removed, so I ran them for about a minute each and then pulled the plugs and tested. I did notice steam coming from the bypass outlet on the thermostat housing on the coupe. I'm assuming it's in need of a head gasket.

What's your opinions on these results guys? What numbers are you all seeing on your rides?

#1 152
#2 145
#3 143
#4 165
on the engine that you think has a bad head gasket does the psi slowly go down or does i stay constant? if it doesnt your valve could be bent piston has a hole or the gasket may be leaking pressure and when you cranded the engine did you crank five times or so that is when the psi is the highest. might get better psi if you run some octane booster in the tank burn all of the junk out of the cylinders or better off run 93 octane with the booster.

Thanks for posting your numbers! How smooth does yours run?

They all seemed to hold pressure fairly steady. I would say that I let the engine turn over more the 5 times. What clues me in on the coupe is the electric fan setup. Obviously the controller went bad and it overheated. Somebody rigged up a manual switch to turn on the cooling fan. Also the coolant was low. But.... I was going to tear down one of the engines and prep it for a turbo.... I guess I'll use the coupe 2.3 for that.

well when i start it its a littly ruff but after start up it purs. if they still slowly lose pressure there is still some leaking air somewhere so mine doesnt leak any if it is losing a psi a minute you wont have probs now but few thousand miles down the road you mostlikly will.

I'm looking for reliability and gas mileage. This will be my DD, I drive about 60 miles a day, so I'm aiming for at least 30 on the hwy. My goal was to decide which motor was better, which appears to be the vert, it runs real smooth too. I'm gonna run it til she pops!!!

just run some octane booster everyonce in a while to burn the junk out of the engine.
