Default 2.3L Engine Buying choices

Ok, I do plan on an eventual turbo motor for my 86 coupe. Looking around at Jyards, and ebay, and of course, here, it seems there are a couple of options.

1) buy a turbo motor, complete
2) buy a 2.3L motor, and add the turbo stuff
3) buy a 2.5L Ranger? motor, and add the turbo stuff.

assuming that I have to go through the motor ANYWAY and will be built for daily commuting (spring/summer/fall) and AutoX/track duty what would be the most economical. I plan on doing it ONCE! I figure I can score a 2.3L non turbo motor for dirt and then use ebay for the fun turbo stuff.

I don't know the intricacies of the motors so... yeah, school me on the turbo 4s!!!

oh yeah, will be mated to a t5, so is there any difference with an auto vs stick crank?

Yes, the only thing with the 2.3 is the Mazdas. I don'ty know about the 2.9 but I know you can get the 3.0 in it.
