Angry 1991 Mustang electrical problems with the brakelights

Just bought a 91 stang and found out I ave electrical issues. I was told the blinkers did not work and it was only a relay so I'm thinking no big deal. Long story short I come to find out the brakelights or taillights don't work with no blown fuses. Headlights work fine. Radio also is out along with the map light but those could be a different problem I dunno first Mustang and I'm not sure of any factory quirks they might have as they age.

So where do I start? Looked over the wiring that I could follow and I could see no shorts but I also figure a short would lead to blown fuses. Any ideas?

Hey! I got in an accident in May and when I got my car back from the Collision Center my brakelight and trunk harness needed to be wired back. Its not really too bad, go to your local Kragen or AutoZone and pick up a Mustang Repair Manual. This will help you on EVERYTHING and they're pretty inexpensive. And it has all wiring diagrams included and is thorough and should help you quite a bit.

That could totally be possible. Matter of fact I talked to the guy I bought it from and he said that he replaced that exact switch and he was a drunk so he probably screwed something up.

Thanx for the help guys and if I have any more problems with it I will post again!

Do the turn signals in the cluster still work when the turn signals are on?

Also, im sure you did this but did you check all the bulbs?

You might want to start poking around with a test light.

Default Turn signal switch

The brake lights and turn signals both go through the turn signal switch. Try subbing it with a known good one. Also check to see if the emergency flashers work. If so, most likely your turn signal switch is bad. (located on the steering column, sometimes called multifunction switch)

And this is why I signed up here. I would have never thought of that. The guy did tell me the turn signal relay (the silver things under the dash, got 2 one on pass side one on drivers side dunno which one it is and neither did he.) So he said that was bad but I have not gotten around to fixing it, the brakelights were a more pressing concern at the time cuz I can always just flick the lever up and down, lol. Seems they are one in the same problem

Would that cause the tail lights not to work when the headlights are turned on? Cuz they don't work either.

Wire on brake pedal are there, plugged in and not worn, bulbs and fuses were the first places I went lol

Thanx for the suggestion with the turn signal relay though thats more than likely the problem at this point.

PS. We can all use a lil chron in our lives Know Denmark is #1 on the happiest places in the world list. Wonder why?

Hi,

Did you even check for continuity at your brake light switch by the brake pedal?
The brake light switch as well as the multifunction switch is like a series parallel circuit. The rear stop lamps are also wired to the multifunction switch as well as to the brake light switch by the brake pedal.

Hope this helps.

So this was the problem, back to the drunk lol.

He had apparently already replaced the brake switch on the pedal (looked fairly new) and was too rough with it. When he plugged it back in the plastic piece on the back of the plug was broken and one of the connectors wasn't.....connected lol.

I taped the back of the plug on for now, put a new switch on just in case and replaced the flasher. Problem fixed! Tail lights, brake lights, blinkers and hazzards all work.
