Default 1991 Mustang Transmission question

The auto tranny in my 91 4 cyl is slipping and I am going to need a rebuild or replacement. I plan on building the motor up when I have time and money ending with a turbo no nos.

My big question is simply which would benefit me more if I am going to end up building the car up in the near future? Would it be better to rebuild the one I have and put higher performance parts in it that will be able to hold to what I end up doing to the motor or should I just start over with a new tranny already built? Which will end up hurting my back pocket less.

I'm new to Mustangs and to this kind of mechanical work so laymen's would be appreciated as would any reference site/materials you might know about. I'd like to do it myself if possible but a tranny rebuild might be out of my league so a shop would more than likely end up doing it unless there is someone in Lakewood, Co who wouldn't mind teaching a guy some tricks

id say rebuild your current tranny, or probably swap to a t5 world class depending on how much power your gunna try to get out of the 2.3

i would get a rebuilt 5 speed just so in the long run you dont spend more money and you will also have more power.

Yeah I thought of that but would the time and effort, not to mention the money needed to install a clutch, be worth it? From what I get from the general racing world is that there are big jumps in auto tranny performace enabling them to compete with manuals.

The amoung of upgrading I do to the motor will depend on how much money I can sink into it. Simple things first then if I am able I would get another 2.3 motor to rebuild and upgrade while still driving with the old motor. I'm kinda liking the motor, good gas mileage is a plus nowaday and the main reason I would wanna stick with this motor. Now if gas drops and a 5.0 drops into my lap, thats a different story.

And last but not least, would a T5 bolt up or do I need a different bellhousing? Also is it strictly a manual tranny? most likely a stupid question and points out the noob.

get a c4 tranny and a converter from it put that in if your not willing to go the t5 route it will hold up to way more abuse then the crappy overdrive tranny and there is good parts for it too.
