swapped the turbo motor in last weekend, started first try. took for a test drive yesterday, runs 10psi, and if stock this motor has 170-190 hp stock, this motor sure doesnt run like it, although its a MAJOR step over the n/a 2.3. any ideas on why it would be lazy? i figured 10psi should help a ton.. maybe im just used to the 5.0..
yea has the computer and vam, didnt think i needed the pump??? yea i can get pictures, depends what you want pictures of. easiest motor swap i ever did, literally hardest part is wirng it and thats not hard at all, once you understand the directions on stingers site lol took a few minutes but i got it..
What was donar car year? Stingers is for 87-88 if using the merkurs there is a differance. Are you running thru stock exhaust. That will kill power. I am running no cat, 3" exhaust and dyrnomax ultraflow. 3" is not too big. Like posted check fuel pressure. Change fuel filter if not already done. Stock pump will get you by.
It might if it is operating at full potential (e.g., NEW).
What is base fuel pressure at?
What is fuel pressure at when at 10 psi boost?
Does it rise 1 psi for each psi of boost?
Have you run it without the knock sensor as a test?
the motor came from an 88 5 spd, first swap i did like this (only other is a carbed 302 in a bronco2), took about 3 hours one night and about 6 the next day. very simple swap, old out in with the new, hook a few things up. worst part was setting the motor in to find out the mounts are in fact different (my fault for not paying attention) it has stock elbow, stock down pipe with a dump for right now, no muffler.. till i can get a new 3" pipe, stock pump is gonna get replaced too. gonna check tonight for proper fuel pressures, ill let you know what i find. knock sensor was broken, so i just never replaced it...
so i messed up on the fuel reading i think. with the vaccuum on, (i found out later its not supposed to be), im getting 30psi at idle, and at 10psi i get 45psi. its slow to get there, weak pump?? also made sure i drove it home reaaaal nice yesterday, almost no boost, and the manifold was glowing. normal? or def. not enough fuel?? trying to order a 255 pump for it before i burn it up, hoping it will cure the laziness.. am i at least on the right track??
I did this swap back in 89 with an 88 Ranger and an 86 SVO engine, Engle Cam, SVO VAM with a XR4ti ECU. Lauched at 5000 RPM, shifted at 7600 RPM.
I ran 70# of fuel pressure at 26psi of boost (o-ringed head). Never ran out of fuel with the stock pump. Not that an upgrade wouldn't hurt with the new stuff out there.
You got the timing set right? Sounds retarded. Did you pull the spout connector when you set it? Is the cam belt timed correctly?
Mine ran 13.20s with a 4.10 gear in the 7.5" rear with slicks. Was a lot of fun back then, and I miss it when I see these posts. Glad to see people are still doing it. There was no info around in 89 to do this swap, lucky for me I worked at a Ford Dealer in Dearborn and spent hours in the parts Microfiche.
Also got 25mpg HWY with the 5spd.

fixed major timing issue. set that right, i cant believe how it pulls for a 2.3! only 10psi and im totally happy with the swap. if it were only a notch lol beater white/gray paint and black 10 holes with chrome centers look badass on a car everyone thinks is slow lol

Now, braze up the nipple going to the wastegate and drill it out smaller, you can keep drilling it until you get the boost you want. 15# should be okay on the stock head gasket. I kept my 22 psi one and can check it if you'd like. You would need to go bigger than that.
You can also do it with a regulator on the inner fender, but I found that the response was to slow and it would over boost.
Have fun...the 2.3 will always be my favorite engine. Now I have a 4.6...coincidence that 2.3 + 2.3 = 4.6

got one of those adj. controllers off a friend for the inner fender. seems to work pretty good, i believe its at 18# right now. runs so good i actually want to race my 5.0 with it..

It's not to bad there, close signal distance. Don't try to move it inside the cab. Will peg the boost gauge before it reacts.
You can run with an otherwise stock Fox Body 5.0 with what you have. Add some to it and beat the ones with gears and H-pipes. At the time, it was a riot for me, because they were brand new cars then.
