Default Need help with my new baby

so i jut got my 90' white hatchback 2.3l n/a lx, the guy that had it before me took off the muffler and turned the exhuast down right after the cat didnt sount great and didnt idle too great either. So today i put a CAI and a Dynomax muffler on it filled it up with premium 93 octane gas and put fuel system cleaner in it, after i was finished with all that i started it up and a huge cloud of white smoke came out for about ten seconds, since no more smoke has came out. but it does seem to idle worse its jumpy and idles from 800-1000 but its real rough. any suggestion on why it would idle like that? thanks

The inconsistant idle could be a vacuum leak. Did you hook up the CAI correctly with all the sensors in the right place?

I think that vacuum hose is for emissions. I have heard of people just capping off those lines to solve that issue.

Might want to change plugs after that burst of smoke.

All those sensors are in place for a reason and serve a purpose. And send signals back to the computer. The computer will then adjust the amount of fuel and air to the engine. If 1 sensor is bad or missing the sensor could be sending the wrong information to the computer. Thus calculating for a rough idle but programmed to think that its good. Any vacuum leak can create a rough idle and poor performance. Vacuum hose is cheap$, replace cracked or dry rotted tubing, even unseen pinholes can create problems.

all the vaccum hoses were replaced before i bought the car. but the guy forgot one, and on the diagram i have of the vaccum lines it just says that the vaccum hose goes into the fender.

If it goes into the fender it is probably supposed to go to the vacuum canister/accumulator. Look in the passenger side fender (wheelwell) to see if it is still there.

Check the bone yards. I wouldn't think it is a popular item to scavenge, so there should be one on the car you come across.

Just plug the line for now. A screw works just fine.
