I have a 1989 2.3L convertible mustang. I really want a 5.0 hardtop but i cant afford it, so im gonna fix mine up. I worry if i ever roll my car ill get crushed because its a convertible. How hard and expensive is it to install a hardtop. I'm willing to fork up the cash for a hardtop but i dont know how hard it will be to install it. Im sure it means welding and bondo.. will a shop do that for me?
How about a rollbar. Maybe not a round one but oval shape. Maybe have to be custom made or maybe they have been already designed and built. That way best of both world. Rollbar is plans for my MGB 2.3 turbo Project.
ya i thot about that but a hardtop always looks better
I never have my top down anyway and i like the look of hardtops. and a hardtop is safer than a convertible if i dont have a roll bar or cage. do u suggest a roll bar or roll cage?
A roll cage in a convertible is going to look......different, lol.
Just get a roll bar.
My 93 needs a new top too. Ive heard the top is easy to install as well as being super difficult. You can get the top, rear window, pads and tenstion cables from ebay as a set. Its about $300.
Just sell the vert and buy a hardtop. A convertible has more value than a hardtop. if you put a hardtop on your vert you will have a chimera; part hardtop part vert with no value to anyone but you. kind of like cutting the fins off an old cadillac. people have done it but you can't sell one.
As to replacing a convertible top. it is NOT easy. the top is $300+ odds are there will also be hardware to replace. Not a project for the average backyard mechanic.
