Default Opinion on this 2.3l engine ...

I'm about to buy a 93 2.3l auto. Odometer says around 27700 miles ...

The overall car is in great shape, minor surface rust on a few spots (fenders in the engine bay, floor of the hatch), perfect interior, runs great, breaks great (was surprised ... didn't expect it to break that strong ... way better than my Pace Car and the owner '88 GT), everything seems to be in a state related to the odometer mileage but the engine ... looks a bit greasy for me ...

Also the accessory belt tensionner looks wrong ... as you can see on the pic ... belt is a bit off ...

What do you think ?

to be honest the 27700 is prolly more like 127700. I bought mine with 146000 on it and it runs well, need a rebuild with performance parts, but thats just me, if you are buying it as a daily driver it is well worth it. (mine only needs rebuilt because it was owned by a couple of kids that beat the crap out of it and then an old couple who knew not how to care for it properly) so if you are sure its been taken car of I would say its worth it

Yeah I agree 127,700. The odometer won't have the 1 in front. Unless what does your seller say the actual mileage is? I bought mine about 3 months ago with 64k and my engine looks cleaner. This is how it looked like when I bought mine.

What should i expect (what kind of problems) from an engine that could be ~127.000 miles ?

it should be relatively good to go.. maybe a tune up, plugs, wires, pcv... it seems to be good..

Yeah it should be good to go. All you would need is a tune up. Oil change, spark plugs, filters etc. The 2.3 engines are very reliable so it should have no major problems if it already is running fine. Especially if the car overall looks in great shape.

Hi,

I would do a carfax report on that car just to check that mileage.

Other than that, the engine bay doesnt look too bad to be honest. As for that tensioner, well theres something wrong there. It looks like the pulley needs to be shimmed or, the pulley/tensioner is wrong or the belt is wrong.

If you want to get a good impression of the internals of that engine, just do a wet and dry compression test. Id also take off the oil filler cap and shine a torch down there to see how clean it looks around the cam ect. Make sure its not all gunked up.

If you do purchase it then a good tune up would be the next step.

As for reliability, the only 2 things i have had to replace on mine is the ICM and the CCRM.

Good Luck.

And about the transmission ? It's an A4LD ... not easy to find here (France) but possible as Scorpio and Transit were available with it ... i wouldn't want to buy a car that the trans will surrender soon. How long does it last usually ? it has a pretty bad reliability reputation.
