My 5.0 was down and we had a points race friday night, so to keep from falling behind in the points race, I brought the 4 banger out. The car does need a set of plugs and wires as it's got a slight miss. It's a '93 5-speed hatchback with 170,000 miles on it. 3.45's in the rear and the only mod is a removed air silencer. Race weight was 3020 lbs. with me in it.
First Run: Dumped the clutch from 3200 expecting a slight chirp, but bogged off the line bad. Shifted right at 5,000 rpm. Ran through the traps @ 5500 in 3rd gear.
60' - 2.582
ET - 18.126 @ 75.38
Next run: Slipped the clutch from 3600 trying to keep the rpm up on the launch, still bogged. Bumped the shift points up to 5500 (think that was too high). Again, ran through the traps @ about 5500 in 3rd gear.
60' - 2.428
ET - 18.103 @ 74.58
Next run: I tried to launch at 4,000 but rolled forward and ended up red lighting. Also missed 3rd gear and aborted the run.
Next run: Again, tried to launch at 4,000 but rolled forward. Botched the launch and ran an 18.6x.
All in all it's about what I expected, but I'm REALLY dissapointed in the weight. My 5.0 only weighs 2865 with me in it, so the 4 bangers got about 150 lbs. on it.
To be honest...no. It was so boring compared to running the 5.0 that I've been thinking of selling it and just buying an F150 or a stock 5.0 for a daily driver.
ok,here's my story;I'm finishing up my 83GT bracketcar, and am building a 460 for it next winter. This summer 's plan was run a stock 302 that I was getting for doing some work on a 390 and putting it in a 81 fastback zepher. In the meantime, the guy with the zepher needs a rearend and gets a one owner 84 4cyl 4spd notchback for $225.00 just for the rear end and gives me the rest!Swapped the 3.45(I think) rear for the 2.73 in the zepher and now the zepher chirps in second and the stang is a PIG!
SO,now I have a 4cyl notch in excellent shape, and I think I'll throw the 9" and 4.86's out of the 83 in it and race that.At least until the 302/c4 is pulled from the zepher and the 390's dropped in.Then maybe I'll stick the 302 in the little notch....
Now there is no rush to finish the 83 and I can take my time and do it right, and race the notchback and if I kill it,who cares,it only cost me labor!
What's the et guess on a stripped notch with a stock 2.3 4spd and 4.86's?
Update;Last weekend was the first weekend of racing here and both stangs aren't done and the truck is broke.
So buddy offered the zepher,of course I accepted.
302/2bbl/single exh/c-4/3.45 gear....MASSIVE TIRE SPIN!!!
Still went four rounds though, mostly by driving the stripe.Quickest et,16.59@ 79.99mph.
Shifted at 4000,went thru lights at 4000.Tried shifting at 4500 once but only made it to 4300 and car was nosing over BIG time.
Sure had a ball though!
Finish truck springs this week I hope and then get the 4 banger ready.
THEN I can post about 2.3 stuff!
I am SO swamped with work right now,but I'm hoping I can get to the track this weekend. But,I'll be taking my truck if I do go as I hav'nt had time to touch either stang. If I go you'll find out what a 300/aod/3.08 will do!
Seriously,I will keep everybody up to date, just don't hold your breath, racing is only every second week here.
July 7,Queens County Raceway,NS.
I WON!!!!!
Took the truck up 'cause the stangs are just not getting the attention they deserve, and I had to race SOMETHING!
This thing is DEADLY,6 passes within 4 thou!
18.67@69.92mph,over and over and over,rain delay 45 min,18.68@69.79mph.
$25.00 entry,$250.00 purse
300/aod/3.08............hard to say with a straight face, but this thing is perfect!hahahaha nope couldn't keep a straight face.
Second time out after a couple years, gotta love it!
Bracket racing, that's what its all about. Consistency. 3 years ago we had a girl race her Dodge Colt and won. 22 seconds everytime, over and over again. They are the tough ones to beat!
To some, these would sound bad, but I have no shame so mine will sound much worse.
I once ran an 83 Pontiac Bonneville Station wagon, crap-brown, with limo tint so no one could see my face. The first couple of times I just fried some 14" tires and ran mid 25s, but then I got some 15" tires and the right distributor put in the Chevy 305 she ran with, and learned to shift a Turbo 350 auto trans. with the stock column shifter. She never went to the track that way, but she beat my heavily modded camaro....
From what you guys have said, I think my Mustang II (stock 2.3 w/ fresh cam/lifters/followers) single 2 1/4 exhaust, no cat, single 24" long Cherry-Bomb Glasspack, cheap 13" tires, stock 4spd and clutch, should run consistent 20s
