First off, your '92 did not come with an AOD. The auto
trans is known as the A4LD (Automatic 4-speed, Light Duty). They have a habit of giving up the ghost, after many miles.
Many have swapped in a C4. There is some trouble with doing it. You need to find the rare 2.3L bellhousing. The C4 was mounted behind the 2.0L, but not many were put behind the 2.3L (from what I've been able to gather).
I wanted to do the C4 swap, myself. To have any chance at a car that would run well and give the fuel economy I wanted, I was looking at adding an overdrive unit to the C4. That gets a tad bit expensive. I ended up finding an A4LD that was built up to handle 300hp. The trick to it is probably not getting the shift kit installed. Mine has the kit in it. And, I'm not super happy about the shift timing.
If you're not looking to make tons of power, I'd get the stock
trans rebuilt. I plan on adding a turbo or turbo motor to my 2.3 notch (sooner or later). But, I'm not planning to make it a fire-breather. If I were going to go that route, I would've spent the money on the C4/overdrive unit combo. I figure that once I get the power ahead of the
trans, the shift kit will be worth it's installation.
There's my two cents.
