Default transmission No forward or reverse

I removed the trans for my kids 93 Mustang lx. It is a 2.3 with a a4ld. The front seal in the transmission was leaking so I replaced the front and back seals and the filter. (Car had sit for two years when I bought it.) I reinstalled the transmission, filled it full of fluid (with the car warmed up) put it in gear and nothing happened. No forward or reverse. I check all the connections and everything looks right. Any ideas? The car drove fine before it just leaked. Thanks, Rich

If you drained the oil from the torque converter either intentionally or otherwise while replacing the front seal, you will have no forward or reverse until the torque refills itself at which time you will have to top up the fluid again. General practice is to put as much ATF as possible into the torque before you put it back in the tranny. Hope this helps...

How do I get the fluid in the torque converter now that it is in? Run the car? in gear or not? I didn't think I lost very much fluid when I changed it But I'm not sure. (working in my driveway at night after work)

The converter will fill as you fill the trans. Are you sure that the converter was all the way in the front pump when you put the trans. back in?

I think the converter was in all the way, I pushed the trans in place and the bellhousing was flush with the back of the motor. No gaps anywhere

It is begginning to sound like the trans. just went bad,it could of had a bunch of additives in it,who knows....I have seen the converter not all the way in the front pump and ruin the pump when installed....At this point i would consider getting it built or picking up another one.

I'm not sure I understand how the trans just stopped working doesn't it give some sign that it's going bad? It didn't slip or anything before this, It just had a small leak

and perhaps,,, loosen a transmission cooler line at the radiator, and see if it is pumping fluid? There is a place on the transmission itself to check the fluid pressure, but It may be just easier to verify the pump is working by loosening the tranny line at the radiator.

I took the cooler line loose and fluid came out, The faster the car ran the more the fluid sprayed out.

Today I started to remove the trans, I noticed that the wires that connect to the rear of the trans (near the spedo cable) that one of them is broken. One looks blue the other looks orange with the orange being broken. Would this stop the trans from going in gear? I'm going to try to fix it with the trans in, But if it make no difference and I have to remove the trans I will fix it with the trans out.

Three things can cause your problem.
1) Low fluid level
2) Low Main control pressure
3) Mechanical damage

Since it was running and shifting fine and we know it is full of fluid, and has been sitting up for a while, I would say it is the main control pressure. A reputable transmission shop can perform a control pressure test. A non-reputable one will try to sell you a rebuilt tranny. It may be that just the govenor needs cleaning, dont take much for it to stick. You could probably clean the gov yourself. Just remove the tail shaft and wa-la, your in!

Hope this helps.

Is there anyway I can check the main control pressure? If not do I need the trans in the car or out to take it to the shop? Also can you tell me more about how to clean the govenor?

There are two methods of performing the control pressure test. Both can be done with tranny in car. One is to perform the test using the engine vacuum. The second method is to use a remote vacuum source such as a distributor tester or a hand operated vacuum pump.........plus, it takes a factory tech manual. You can get these from DACCO for around 20 bucks.

To clean the gov. You must suppport the back of the engine, drop the exhaust, remove cross member, and remove tranny tail shaft. Govenor is next to body of tranny. Been awhile, but I believe just a couple of bolts and it comes apart. It's a counterweight type gov and sometimes when one sets up awhile, it sticks. When I rebuilt my tranny. I neglected to take my gov apart and clean it good and wound up with almost the same situation you have. Once I cleaned it, tranny worked great.
