Unhappy 87 Transmission Problems

Ok, I drive an 87 LX 2.3L Automatic. My biggest problem now is the transmission. When I leave it in overdrive, it slips out of first and second, usually after coming to a stop. But when I leave it in drive, although I don't get forth gear, it doesn't slip at all. Also, if I hit a bump in just the right way(which doesn't take much), the car starts to kind of vibrate, as though some gears are rubbing together the wrong way, and the only way to make it stop is to let off the gas for a few moments. If you have any advice or tips then please help

Try changing the fluid and filter. Also u could add a can of B.G. transmission treatment.

my tranny in my 93 2.3 was doing the same thing and eventually lock up on me, i hope that you have better luck than i did, but it sounds like your transmission is about to go. It seems to be pretty common for the automatic trannys to go out in the 2.3l mustangs, probably b/c they get worn out after at least 20yrs of having to work hard, with the little engine not having as much power the autmatics have to shift a lot more to keep the car going. I converted my 93 2.3l to a manual and put a t5 in it, so i dont have the problem of the autmatic transmissions any more.

so I'm thinking of replacing it for a T-5 in the near future. What kinds of things do I need to look at when searching for one?
