Seriously, autozone sells a $30 code reader. Use it, it may help you track this down, then based on the codes everyone can help you a little better than this shot in the dark.

Sounds like maybe your EGR Valve Position(EVP) sensor may be bad. Run these tests on this Autozone article. They are exactly the same as the Chilton's guide. AutoZone.com | Vehicle Selection - Year

Here's a bit more background stuff:
Ford Fuel Injection » EGR Valve Position sensor (EVP)
EDIT: This link will show you the what the pins are on the connector just in case the pictures don't show up on the autozone site. They didn't come up for me.

Read the first part and the service tip at the end of this article:
http://www.tomco-inc.com/Tech_Tips/ttt19.pdf

Anyway, that autozone link should probably clear things up for you. You can just ignore the last two links, they're just extra.

Oh, one more thing... I know the EGR is opened by the computer not only based on exhuast content but also on high engine temperatures. The recirculated exhaust burns at a lower temp than a more oxygen rich mix, therefore lowering the temp of the engine. You mentioned that your car messes up when the car warms up, that could point to the EVP/EGR as well.

Everyone should remember that before pulling trouble codes, making sure all of the electrical connections, vacuum lines, and intake tubing clamps should be secure. There should be no obvious vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, or unmetered air being introduced into the engine. Pulling codes will point you to a possible problem. Sometimes, another separate problem will contribute to the code being set in the ECM.

Yep, that'll do it! Sorry, I've never actually had to deal with a sweet fuel tank. Did you ask why that tool would do that to your car?
