Unhappy Need Help With Timing Light on 89 2.3 Liter

First of all, I DID SEARCH, but couldn't find all the info i needed. But if there is a write up with this information I would appreciate a link.

With that being said, I have a 89 2.3 liter. I borrowed a timing light BUT cant get it to light up so before i assume its broken i have a couple questions.
1. The cable for neg and pos are not marked, does it matter? (I tried both ways)
2. Do i just clamp the Num. 1 plug wire or do i actually have to somehow conect it to the plug?

I feel really dumb for not knowing this but i dont have the instructions for the light, and who i borrowed it from never used it.

The negative and positive should be marked and go directly to the battery....the connector for the plug wire just clamps around the number 1 wire. When you start the car and press the button on the timing light, you should see it strobe.

Ok, they aren't marked so i tried both ways and did clamp it around the num. 1 wire. I thought i was doing it right but wasn't sure. I guess his lights broken or i burnt it up by putting it on wrong first. But thank you for your help.
