First off, make sure you have a large drain pan because the total fluid capacity for your
trans and torque converter is 12 quarts.
Here's what you need to do;
- Jack up both sides of your Mustang and place it on jack stands
- Remove the lower engine dust cover
- Rotate the torque converter until the drain plug comes into view
- Remove the drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain (it's going to take some time)
- While it's draining you can start removing the transmission fluid pan so you can change the filter (this is a must)
- Loosen all of the bolts and carefully break the gasket seal and allow the fluid to drain out of the pan (this can be a bit messy)
- Remove the bolts and lower the transmission pan at an angle to drain out the rest of the fluid
- Throw the old gasket away and carefully clean the gasket mating surfaces (DO NOT allow pieces of the old gasket to remain on the valve body or in the pan!!!)
- Clean the transmission oil pan thoroughly using a safe solvent then allow it to air dry. DO NOT use a cloth to dry the pan because it might leave behind bits of lint
- Now you can loosen and remove the filter screen retaining bolts then lower the filter screen from the transmission
- Install the new oil filter screen making sure all gaskets/seals are in place, then reinstall the screws.
- Place a new gasket on the fluid pan and bolt it back up to the transmission
- Tighten the attaching bolts to 96-120 inch lbs.
- By now the torque converter should be drained so you can reinstall the drain plug.
- Once everything is buttoned back up, take your car off of the jack stands and pour in 12 quarts of transmission fluid through the dipstick sleeve under the hood. (Drive your car easy for a few miles to allow the torque converter to refill and circulate the fluid through the new filter)
