1993 Mustang LX Convertible 2.3: Hi I just bought the car. I am taking it to the mechanic to get the water pump done, (I think the weep hole leaks in heavy traffic/idle), and get the timing belt done. The mechanic says the car has a timing chain not a belt. I just checked my new Chilton's. I am right, right? The 93 2.3 motor has a timing belt, right?
Yes chain not belt, no need to replace it unless it is real stretched.

If you're getting the water pump replaced, you may as well have them do the timing belt at the same time. It'll save you $ on labor time by doing them together.

Right. That is what I figured. I am going to tell him to check all the belts while he is doing it, and replace them as needed. BTW, he is charging 190.00 for the water pump. 150.00 of that is labor. I gigure the timing belt shpould add about another 40 dollars right? So 200 or so to do the timing belt and water pump, that is fair, right? I would do it myself, but I live in an aprtment and park in an open lot, and I have to work all week.

Wow. $150.00 labor for 3 bolts, 4 nuts, and a hose clamp?
If he were to do the belt and all for $200.00, it might be worth it. The belt is a LOT more involved than the water pump.
A little warning here though.....if this person thinks it came with a timing chain vise a belt, he probably shouldn't be working on this engine. My $.02.
If your mechanic did not know this,I would not let him touch it,just my 2 cents worth.

I have to agree with heavy metal and NavySVO. You shouldn't be taking your car to someone that's going to be "learning as he goes". Your mechanic should know what procedures and parts are involved to do the job correctly before he even pops the hood, especially since you're only asking him to perform maintainence type repairs not troubleshoot a problem.
