Default Clutch Burned up

I have been having problems with the clutch in my 87 2.3 it has been slipping for some time now and just kept getting worse. Well tonight i was on the freeway and it got to where i couldn't go above 50 and my rpm's were at 4.5k to even keep it at that speed it was slipping so bad. Well i got off the freeway and just as i did there was a huge pop and bang and now you can put it into any gear while it is running without using the clutch. Is this normal when a clutch burns out to be able to choose any gear while it is running using no clutch and have it do nothing? we towed it home and it didnt make any funny sounds I am really hoping it is just the clutch and not something else..please help!!!

I can't tell you for sure but sounds like you blew the clutch up. When it went bang it may have scrambled the clutch where it will no longer engage with the flywheel so nothing is actually moving. So it is acting like the motor is not even running. No pressure plate etc to disengage so to speak. Sounds like your clutch is just completly gone. Did you hear any parts drop???
