Default Rear end quistions and possible swap

I have an 8.8 rear end with 3.27 posi. First off, I believe that would be a bit to low for my 1993 lx 2.3, i like the little acceleration I have. But I looked at everything and it should drop right in, but I want lower gears, something more in the 3.70's or possibly even 4.11's (after I get a manual of course, I like my mpg XD ). So my question is, would I have to look for a special gear set to keep the posi in the rear end? I'm not completely sure how it works (yet. I have not opened it up). I just don't want to buy gears and lose what I got the rear end for in the first place. (no worries it was free )

No, you won't lose the limited slip feature when you change gears. That job is handled by the differential itself. It's doo-hicky the ring gear bolts to and the axles attach to.

Yup, just as b chandler said, just replace the ring and pinion gears(about$150-$175) on the differential itself. If the differential had a lot of miles on it it might need a rebuild kit as 8.8 traction locks have a tendency to not work on higher mileage cars.

I think you meant the 3:27 gears would be a bit too high, not low as you're looking at 3.70s or 4.11s.

Well yeah I get a lil messed up with things like that. Thanks for the help. And as for a rebuild kit, how much do those run?

I tried a 8.8 limited 327 in my 89turbo. Didn't like it and was noisy. Now have a 86 turbocoupe 345. I am more pleased with gear ratio. It did widen the rearend a little more. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...5/100_6178.jpg

You can also replace two of the metal clutches with two friction clutches for a better grab.
