Default 2.3 driveshaft balancer

The driveshaft yoke on the 2.3, 4 speed (out of an 86 Mustang) I'm building for my race truck has a round steel balancer on it. This balancer looks like it's held in place by molded rubber. Is this balancer required if the driveshaft is balanced? And if not, can it be removed by cutting the molded rubber? It would be nice to get that extra 2-3 pounds of rotating weight off of the driveshaft.

That balancer is on the yoke side. You could always switch it out for one without the balancer and free up even more weight. I was always under the impression that the driveshaft balancer was for NVH anyway so since it's a race truck, swap the yokes and try it. The worst that could happen is you'd have to get the driveshaft balanced at a shop.

The C4/T5 yoke should be the same.

Thanks for the info. I could not find out if any other yoke would fit that trans so you've been a big help.
