Any Suggestions? 1989 Mustang Coupe Help!

i have an 89 coupe and i have a problem my car now starts jus fine now that i put a new starter in it. but wen i drive it its like it kinda putt putts, and starts up goin REALLY slow even if i floor it. and it kinda makes like a sputtering noise like it might back fire. it does tha till it reaches bout 25 mph and i was thinkin it might be due to the fact of me not having a MAF SENSOR. BUT WEN I WENT TO AUTOZONE PART STORE THEY TOLD ME THAT 89 MODELS DIDT COME WIT 1. SO CAN ANY1 SHED SOME LIGHT PLEASE.

I didn't notice I ws in the 2.3 section at first. You have a differten system than the 5.0's. Its called a themostatic air inlet system.
Is that hooked up correctly?

I'll write what it says in my chilton manual

"The duct and valve assambley which regulates air flow from the cool and heated sources is attached to the air cleaner. The flow is regulated by means of a door that is operated by a vacuum motor. The operation of the motor is controlled by a bimetal sensor."

I'm pretty sure the bimetal sensor is the maf.
Also get yourself a shop manual, mine has helped me out countless times.

You should be able to use a cold air intake. Im not sure if one is make for the 2.3. If not, you could use one made for the 5.0 and find a way to make it fit. I would suggest the fender mount CAI.

Ok that flap he is talking about is in the air box. That has nothing to do with the sputtering. All that does is draw warm air in to help with cold starts. It sounds like the MAP sensor to me. Mine went bad and that same thing happened to Me. And yes Autozone is right our cars DO NOT have mass air sensors. That's what the map sensor is for. As for the location of it, it's on the firewall directly behind the throttle body, it's a square little black box. Try this to fix your problem. Oh and as for CAI just go to autozone and make one. They have (or should) the stuff to make them. The 5.0 Intake thing takes too long

Could it of maybe of been a bad power connection?.... He said that the problem started after he put the new starter on it.

map stands for manifold absolute pressure. It basically measures the pressure in the intake manifold and sends it to the ecm(engine control module.

Yes jerry is right manifold absolute pressure. This is of those little things that gets over looked really easy. As I said before this was my problem. I hope this helps you.
