Question 2 problems to state...

Problem 1: Ecsessive play in the steering wheel. Nothing wrong with any of my steering components, like sway bar bushings or anything like that. I think its actually in the steering column. Anyone have or had a problem like this?

Problem 2: I had a thermostat that was stuck closed, so I went to the local j/y and found another fox and took the therm out of that one. Now that one is stuck open, or at least i think it is.

Heres the problem though: The rad fan doesnt work with the orignal wiring. Or at least I think it didnt cause of the thermo being stuck closed. Would that cause the fan to not go on? Same thing with the stuck open one? I dont want to buy a brand new thermostat if that isnt that problem and theres something wrong with the wiring. could there be something wrong with the temp sendin unit? Im confused. Please help.

Problem 1: Check the rag joint on the steering column near the rack. It's a very common problem. Replacements are available in the HELP! section at a good local parts store.

Problem 2: The thermostat does not control the fan directly. Does the fan come on when the A/C is turned on? If so, you know the fan is still good. Maybe a bad temp switch.

I took my A/C out, so no way of knowing. But I do know the fan still works cause I have it running all the time when the car is on. Just have it spliced into the fuse box. What would I need to do for the temp switch?

As for the rag joint, is that underneath the column cover?

No, the rag joint is between the rack and pinion shaft and the shaft that goes to the steering wheel,(in the engine compartment over the drivers side part of the K member).

#1 Can check thermostat. Put pan of water should be closed. Start to boil the water. Just before it comes to boil should open. Probably good if does this. Make sure to install correct and not block the heater line.
#2 Fan controller under dash is correct for the 89. Mine was bad when I got it. Small black box with TRW on it. Bet you find burn'
t wire connection at it. Replace it and connector. Or do like me and wire in separate realy using the circuit board to control extra relay. Pm me if want details. May search my post seems like posted it before.

#1 Agree about rag joint.
#2 Fan is controlled by box under column. Has TRW on it. Probably has burn't connection. Replace it and connection or do like me and put in extra relay and wire into the box. Pm me for detail or search my post I think I posted it here.
Also can test thermostat by putting in water and boiling it. Just before water boils. It should open. If not bad or is stuck open bad. If passes this test probably good. Ps I have had new ones bad.

If you find the TRW box to be fried, you can avoid wasting your money on a new one and protect your investment at the same time.

A new aftermarket fan controller can cure the problem and move all that excess current to under the hood and out of the passenger cabin which will keep the car from being a potential electrical fire. That TRW box failed for a reason, and thank goodness it did or something else under the dash would have gone POOF!

SPAL makes a nice fan controller for about the same cost as a new TRW box and will do a better job. It has a 2 speed feature which YOU can set when they actuate. At a predetermined temp the fan runs at 1/2 speed, at the other predetermined temp the fan comes on full speed.
You can also use your existing temp sensor to activate your existing fan, or get one of their fans. How easy is that?
You can google SPAL for a dealer.

Ok I also have taken out my ac. Now neAr your condensor there was a few electrical. Connections... Right and that is what causes your fan to kick on when you turn the ac on. What I did to save money is just run wires to a toggle switch and mount it somewhere in the car. Takes maybe 30 mins at the most. These 2.3 don't really need a fan unless your sitting still. But all you have to do is keep an eye on your temp gauge and your fine. I ran 14 gauge wire to mine and a 30 amp switch. No more than 15 bucks.
