Default Excessive play in steering wheel 89 2.3?

Ever since my brother crashed it the steering wheels racheting mechanizm didn't engage to well. Meaning you could put the steering wheel in a poistion and pull it down forceibly. Now theres about 1-2 inches back and fourth play in the wheel? any advice is apperciated. Thanks

I do not know about the pulling down thing, but I do know that if your steering coupler is bad you get a lot of play in the steering wheel. I just had to replace mine, and the thing is, if the coupler is bad, and it breaks while you are going down the road, you will have absolutely no steering control. Not good.

Need another steering column. Most steering column are design to collapse in accident so your ribs are not crushed. There is problably a shear pin or joint [unknown to me what it is] that may be replaceable. Easiest thing maybe a used j-yard column.
