Default Flywheel interchange

Are the 2.3 flywheels pretty much interchangeable over the years on the manual tranny cars? How about starters - if a newer starter bolts perfectly to an older bellhousing, will it still engage the flywheel teeth?

The flywheels were all the same diameter. The clutches however were not.

The starter should work fine.

The starter from a 93 Ranger won't work on my application. I'm trying to use it because it's a small diameter and fits my application better. I bolted the starter from the Ranger up to a 4 speed bellhousing from an 86 Mustang 2.3 and the gear won't engage the flywheel even though the starter bolts up perfectly. The gear on the 93 starter is larger than the gear on the 86 starter. I would think the 2.3 flywheels were the same from Mustang to Ranger and the starter gears would be the same.
