Smile 1989 Mustang LX 2.3 liter turns off

My stang just turned off on me while driving on the freeway. Couldn't go past 45mph when it turned off (choked?). Was able to coast off the freeway and park. Waited a few minutes and turned on again but idle was very low. Had to keep pressing the gas while stopped at a traffic light to keep it going. Any ideas on what to check greatly appreciated.

My guess is your TFI module took a dump. They are notorious for failing like that due to heat and vibration. They exhibit the kinds of behavior you are talking about.

Pull the module off your distributor

go here

TFI TESTING

and check your resistances

you may want to consider a remote mount

Actually, you don't even need the tool if you replace the screws with a Phillips-head set.

Unfortunately on my XR4Ti, the alternator mount gets in the way and most times I have to yank the dizzy to get to mine. I relocated it so I dont have to do this anymore

but yeah, a phillips or hex set would work

I checked mine and didn't see a phillips screw. Screw seems to have a bolt type head which would require a deepsocket. Is the hex set you refer to a torx?

Went to AutoZone and Oreilly's Auto. They tried every tool they had. Either the socket was too thick to fit in the opening or the socket was too small. Maybe a chisel or crowbar might do the trick.

Wasn't able to remove the module. Was considering taking my car to a mechanic but luckily asked a mechanic friend first about this problem. He told me to look for a broken vacuum line near the air intake leading to the throttle body. Sure enough I found a thin hard plastic vacuum line that split in half. Patched it up and idle problem disappeared.

cool, congrats on the fix. FYI, you need the TFI removal tool which you should be able to get from any local parts house.

Bought this tool but didn't work. I took my car to two auto parts houses and had the counter guys come out with their tool box. They tried every tool they had with no luck. Either the socket was too large to fit the opening or too small for the bolt head. Guess I will have to take it to a mechanic whenever the module goes out.
