Hey i got a big problem, I'm in New York city and my 92 mustang is leaking trans fluid after driving 800 miles from Chicago. It looks like it is coming out of where the trans meets the engine. It only started leaking at the end of the trip, so I think the trans is overheating. I'm wondering if there is any cooler i can buy that will fit my mustang. Thanks
*sigh* the way i see it. if it stops leaks...its stops otehr stuff... although i did use an emergency bottle of STP stop leak in my power steering pump... and to this day...its working...

i agree on the stop leak stuff. also agreed on the front seal. have fun with that one. it took me about 4 1/2 hours to do it. and when that thing goes boy does it go.

So on my way back to Chicago from New York, I watched the trans fluid more carefully. When I started the level was about 1/3 of the way up on the crosshatching on the dipstick. After about 200 miles of driving the fluid level went about 1/4 inch above the crosshatching! So I stopped for an hour and the fluid level went down where it should be. So I'm thinking the the trans might be getting too hot because I had 2 people and about 300 pounds of stuff in the back. The good news is that it didn't leak on the way back and I didn't even put any leak stop in. ( just high mileage trans fluid before went back ) So I don't know if I should put a trans cooler on or get the car looked at by a mechanic I know who does really good work for an honest price.
So I'm pretty sure that i am going to buy a trans cooler. Just wondering what kind I should buy and where to mount it. I'm thinking about putting it in front of the radiator, right? Also kinda thought it would be cool to get a trans temp gauge . I'm wondering how to hook that up too. Any tips are welcome.
i may be wrong, but i thought that trans fluid - like most fluids - expands when it gets hot and that would explain why it was 1/3 of the way into the crosshatching when you started and about 1/4" above the crosshatching after about 200 miles.
i'd be seriously afraid of a trans leak if it were me, but that may be because i just spent almost 2k on a trans rebuild. i guess if you want to put a cooler on it, that wouldn't be a bad thing. but on my stang at least, it runs it through the radiator and that's the factory installed cooler for it.
whatever you do though, after having mine rebuilt, i'd keep a darn good eye out for a leak.
you can get a hard wired gauge, i got one, not in my car for trans temp
its a thermomiter with a super long lead. screws in to the trans, solid wire up to the gauge, simple.
