Exclamation 2.3L 86 4-speed manual to the newer t-5 will it bolt right up?? PLEASE HELP>>>???

Alright guys my 4spd tranny just went out after about 230K miles it has served me well.... i was going to see if any of you have ever heard of anyone being able to swap the early 4 spd manual tranny known as the (ET GERMANY) over to the newer T5 2.3 tranny?

IM so desperate right now because im looking at a 4spd tranny on ebay for 375 shipped but if i can get a t5 to work ide rather have the overdrive( AND MORE GEARS!) haha?

Any problems i might run into like belhousing ,shifter cable or driveshaft length you guys can think of??

any help would be greatly apreciated?? THANK YOU

4-Speed INFO I GOT FROM READING ABOUT 25 PAGES OF POSTS:
(The transmission is a Ford ET transmission. It was built in Germany and used in quite a few cars over the years. They could be found in 74-80 Pintos and Bobcats (the tailshaft is different on these) 74-78 Mustang IIs, 79-86 Capris, Mustangs, Fairmonts, and Zephyrs. I believe ET is cast into the case, tailshaft, and is also on an ID tag on the case.)

Your 4speed bellhousing will not work. Will need the t-5. Speedometer cable should be ok. Driveshaft I think will be differant. Maybe some wiring as far as neutral switch and backup. But I can help on that one if get to that point. On the cable not sure. May need the newer cable. Just down a bunch of search local. NAPA was only ones able to get one. Maybe can get online. I done some searching on net and found not much. There is info of t-9 to t-5 for the Merkur but that was little help. I get a t-5 with bellhousing with driveshaft if possible. And go from there. And please do a writeup to help others. I got some pictures of the cable area on a t-5 2.3 I had. If need them. Unsure on flywheel but stop by your autoparts and have them compare flywheel part numbers t-9 vs t-5 Maurice

Stay away from a T9, they are nota good choice and that's why the Xr4ti guys toss them for the T5. You should be able to go to a junk yard and pull the tranny, drive shaft, bell housing, etc... from a 2.3 5 speed Mustang and bolt it all in.

I would drain and replace the fluid. Use ATF synthetic. DO NOT USE GEAR OIL, use ATF.

I would put a new pressure plate and disc in it, and have the flywheel resurfaced. That is just me saying. Why do all that work and have to turn around again who knows when to do it all over again?

The Fox era transmissions were made under the Borg-Warner name. Tremec came later. Not that it's relevant to this thread.

Angry

OKay guys got my tranny out and everything (EVERYTHING FROM THE FLYWHEEL BAC TO THE DRIVE SHAFT).... I ended up getting my old flywheel RE-surfaced got it back and put the flywheel back in... i wanted to freshen up the junkyard tranny B4 i put it in so I ended up getting a new clutch kit for the 1990 T5 tranny ($90) from advanced auto parts... I was really exited to put these clean new parts in when I get to
#1 MY FIRST PROBLEM.....

Keep in mind I used my old 4 speed flywheel had it re-surfaced.... THE FREAKIN PRESSURE PLATE BOLT HOLES/MOUNTING TABS DIDNT LINE UP WITH THE OLD FLYWHEEL... SEE I CHECKED B4 WITH THE PARTS STORE THAT THE FLYWHEEL ON BOTH YEARS (86-90) WERE THE EXACT SAME PART# I WAS LIKE WTF???

GUESS I SHOULD HAVE GOT THE OTHER FLYWHEEL OFF THE OTHER CAR???

MY SOLUTION NOW: USE THE OLD PRESSURE PLATE ON THE NEW CLUTCH DISK BECAUSE THE 10 SPLINE IS ALL I NEED TO FIT THE T5...... HOPEFULLY IT WORKS!!

SO LESSON #1 in ET 4spd to T5 5spd SWAP:
GET FLYWHEEL OFF DONOR CAR OR BUY A NEW ONE B/C HOLES WONT LINE UP....

FLYWHEEL PART #'S DID MATCH PERFECT SO IM LIKE OKAY IL SPEND 40 BUCS AND GET IT RE SURFACED... BAD IDEA....... BOLTS DONT FIT??

BY THE TIME I PAY 20 for the junkyard FLYWHEEL and 40 for another resurface I could have bought A BRAND NEW FLYWHEEL...

I RECOMEND GETTING A NEW FLYWHEEL>>> THATS WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE........
