Default 87 mustang computer code reading problem

I am having problems doing the diagnostic procedures on my 2.3 mustang. The car will pull the key on engine off codes with no problem, but it will not start while the car is set up to read codes so I am unable to pull any of the other codes. I read in my Haynes manual that the first start in diagnostic mode is trying to advance the timing by 20 degrees, so I am thinking that this has something to do with it. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this issue? By the way, the codes the car pulled with key on engine off were for EGR system and ac clutch, but the ac is not connected, so that is not surprising. I have changed the egr solenoid, canister, and sensor within the last year or so. Is there anything else related to the egr that I should change?

Odd. What have listed you may know or not. Just the best idea I can come up with. Maybe it will help solve your problem. This may or not help. List of codes and possible causes. It says bronco but still Mustang codes.

Actually, I am using a 12 volt test light and counting the flashes. I am following the instructions for pulling codes provided by the Haynes manual for the car. I do have an update as well, I tried again to pull codes and the car still would not start. I decided to floor the accelerator and try starting it and it started but ran really poorly. At any rate, it pulled some codes and I am interested in one in particular. The code is for air charge temperature low. I am curious as to what causes that. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, thanks everyone for your help so far.

Does your model have a VAF meter? If so, there is a VAT (Vane Air Temp) sensor inside it and it may have gone bad. If this is the case, the EEC may be calling for max fuel because it thinks the outside air temp (intake air) is max cold.
Either that or you have an ACT sensor.
This would make sense when you had to floor it to get more combustion air through the throttle body.
What was the number on that code?
