Default 1988 Mustang 2.3lx engine rpm problems

A while after I turn on my car, the car the engine shakes and the rpm needles goes from like 500 to 1,200 continuously for a while. Sometimes the car even turns off. Sometimes it also turns off when its on park and i put it on either reverse or drive.

sounds like a massive vacuum leak.. go to the vacuum tree, and first make sure every port has something on it. then, one by one, pull off the vacuum lines and hold your finger over the hole. see if it changes the idle speed.. o yeah do this whole thing when its running

I bought a new iac valve and the idle problem went away. The only thing is that (forgot to mention it also smoked while it idled) it still smokes but the engine barely shakes(like it wants to). I did some research and question and people say its the Map Sensor or EGR or something else. What can it be?

If you suspect the EGR, unplug the vacuum solenoid to it and see if anything changes

more than likely if its the MAP sensor the car will barely run at all. mine went out a long time ago and you'll be lucky if you can keep the car running.

What exactly is EGR because I dont think I understand. I've cleaned the part ( dont make fun of me, please correct) where it says "EFI 2.3" with a carb cleaner can. But was it BLACK and MUSHY goo. It was basically covered completely inside. Maybe a pencil would have barely fit.

its called Exhaust gas recirculation all it does is take exhaust and pump it back through the intake. for "Environmental" reasons.

I replaced the map sensor two days ago. When the car started it was working fine. No smoke, no idle. Today I wake up and turn on my car. I go to open the gate and when look back at the car, it started to throw black smoke again. DANG IT!!! Could it really be the EGR or Vacuum tree?

Black smoke? That means it's running WAY rich.

Did it do this only after it had warmed up? Pull the ECT and see if it has a ton of gunk built up over it. 25mm wrench IIRC.

Here's the video. A little late because I had to save money to buy an HD camera so it could pic up the smoke better.
