I want to put window tint on my Mustang. I think tinted windows look really cool, but I don't want to get a ticket for having my windows too dark. Does anyone know what the darkest legal window tint is in Iowa? Thanks!

It all depends on your State laws. Here in MA, your back window can be as dark as you want but the driver and passenger windows can only block 35% of light.
i got a ticket for being too dark. the law in ND is 50% on the sides. do a google search. dont just post up here. email your local police station. do some research.
dude u live in Iowa do u even see any cops..just ride half down..i always go black here in ct the cops never say anything..the worst part is backin up in the dark u cant see ****

I got burned this way before, I'd never trust anyone that is trying to sell something.
That would be kind of stupid for a place to lie about what tint is legal. I don't think that dark tint would cost any more than light tint, it's more labor that you pay for. My guess is the guy didn't have any clue what was legal and what wasn't so he just pulled a number out of his butt.
I didn't know what MA laws were until I asked the guy that did my tint. He asked me how dark I wanted it and I said legal, so then he asked how dark I wanted the back since there was no limit. I told him as dark as possible without making it impossible to see at night when backing up.

That is why I said go to a COUPLE of tinting places. If the stories don't jive, than you know someone is BSing you.
So you never buy anything anymore? Re-read your post.
I went to 3+ in Massachusetts when I lived there. All of them gave me the same recommendation. All of them failed to take into account that the factory tint would make it too dark. The nice Massachusetts State Police officer that deemed my car unfit for public roads until I scraped my tint off was even nice enough to remove my license plates before having my car impounded.
I can re-read my post all you like and you can make fun of it. I still buy plenty of things, but in an industry as shady and misinformed as window tinting, I would trust NOONE with my car ever again except the local police department. I would go as far as having my current windows tested by them so that I was sure to not go over the legal limit. Some states are not as strict, but I can state for certainty that Massachusetts is BRUTAL if you go over the legal tint limit.

Shady? Tinting? That's actually a good one!

Sounds like some legislation is in order.
I find it pretty darn piss-poor that 3+ places said the same thing. I guess I got lucky in Florida that I found several legit places when I was stationed down there. Of course, down there if you don't have tinted windows your car becomes an instant oven. They actually explained the legal limit, measured it in front of me when the job was finished, and supplied a written garrantee/warranty that if it was deemed too dark by Florida authorities, they would pay the fine(s), court costs, etc. I guess that is how they stayed in buisiness so long, because the were pumping out tinted windows like women do babies in Africa.
I would venture a guess that since (M)assachusetts (LOL!) hardly has enough sun to actually require window tinting so it is mostly cosmetic there unlike Florida where you can actually cook food inside a car without window tinting.
Also, there are no good local based shops (around Worcester atleast) doing this type of work. It is all the chain based shops like Ziebart and I guarantee they are told to push the most expensive stuff and to get it in and out as fast as possible with little regard to the customer. When I went to the shop that did my car to complain I was told that it was my responsibility to make sure I had picked the proper tint.
Not to beat a dead horse, but I would and always advise anyone that wants the maximum tint level to go to a local cop shop and let them test your current windows and give you the exact # you can go to. These laws vary so wildly and change so often that even a website could be out of date. Given the sheer amount of work it takes to get this stuff off, it's worth the aggravation to do so.
Ahh yes, sounds like you managed to find 3 idiots then. The guy at the place I went to in Bedford MA mentioned that factory tint would adjust the darkness when I put tint on, but since I didn't have any factory tint that wasn't an issue for me.
And the cop, man he sounds like a dick. Sounds like you got screwed on both ends. Most cops would just give you a ticket and tell you to get it taken care of.
