Default please help no 2nd gear

well me and my wife got a mustang from her father. after driving it home from nj to al we noticed it would not shift correctly so today we changer the filter and while i took it out to test it going threw ther gears i noticed whrn it go from od to d it down shifts but from drive to 2 it just revs so i guess second is gone and when u drive you have to let of the gas and wait for it to shift. im guessing cause 2nd gear is gone it takes longer to shift is there anything i can do or do i have to rebuild the trans i never rebuilt anything in my life would it be easy to do myself if i bought a rebuild kit or better to take it to a transmission shop and let them do it what whould it cost if i had some1 else do it? the thing that suxs is her father builds and races 92 mustangs and if we noticed this sooner we could have had him rebuild it. now where 1100 miles away.

more free things to try.

check adjustment on shifter cable, dont make since but stranger things have happened.

try a total fluid replace.

check all electrical, cable, and linkage connections.

hopefully this helps out some!

be careful.

transmission shops can charge alot and tell u wrong things, thus i did an experiment.

had a leaky trans oil cooler.

shops know most humans cant wrench on an automatic,

they said it was my front main seal, would cost $350 pull and then $70 labor.

i replaced my oil cooler with one i made from a kit ( because $380 from dodge was way too much ) and problem solved!

moral dont trust automatic shops further than you can spit against a hurricane.

take it to a trusted mechanic

Default A4LD is not an easy rebuild

You need special tools, a good manual, a good rebuild kit, AND experience rebuilding automatic transmissions before you try an A4LD. I have rebuilt a lot of them and I can tell you I would much rather rebuild an AOD anyday. Be very sure that you have the fluid level correct. Also make sure that the vacuum line going to the modulator valve is not loose or damaged. If everything checks OK and the symptoms that you described persist, you need a rebuild. I do NOT recommend that you try it yourself. Get estimates from several shops. Good Luck with it.
