Default 1989 Mustang 2.3l R134a conversion kit

I have a 1989 mustang lx 2.3l, anyone know what i need to buy to change my old r12 to 134a and what kits are the best or worst!!

Also i have power going into the accumulator but no power to the compressor (where the electrical plugs in on the compressor) was told i need to change over and charge it to see if the compressor is bad. Anyone have a better solution? Thanks for the help

try jumping the low pressure switch if you have one on top of your accumulator if the compressor kicks in your are either low on freon or the switch is broken. As for the kits You could go to a wal-mart and get the convert kit or the best thing is go to a shop and have them do it for you.

...and drain all the old oil out of the system, put the proper amount and type of PAG oil back into the system and vacuum it down to check for leaks and pull all the moisture out of the system.

Still sound like fun?? Seriously, if you're coming here to ask how to do it, you need to take it to a professional. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just being straight with you so you don't end up wasting money and ending up frustrated and without A/C.

go to local auto parts store buy the retro kit for 134a drain all the system down put 1 can of oil and 3 cans of 134a you should be ice cold if everything is on the up and up!! if that dont work check for leaks with the die! far as no power to compressor run a straigtwire to battery, check the wires on the compressor with test light see wich one is hot. the compressor should come on.

Hey mike89 thanks for the reply. Not to sound stupid but what do you mean by jump the low pressure switch? I had a mechanic look at that and he used a paper clip in that switch (plugs into accumulator) and nothing happened, then he used a volt meter and determined that their was power getting to the accumulator but none to the compressor (the switch)

My major concern is trying to determine if the compressor is any good, hasn't worked since i bought the car a couple of years ago. Has factory air, anybody know a place to purchase one if need be? Reasonable price

Check Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto for a compressor.

Ok so it must not be that switch. Another idea is it could be the a/c relay switch, that is if you have one. P.s. I have no clue where it is.

As for the compressor try checking partstrain.com or autopartswarehouse.com. Hope this helps

Default Remember to FLUSH the system and ...

Please remember to FLUSH the system, REPLACE THE RECEIVER DRYER and expansion valve!!! The flush removes any left over R12 contaminated oil pockets. The dryer and expansion valve also will hold debris and are also contaminated with R12.

YOU MUST evacuate the system (you need a vacuum pump) and keep it at vacuum for atleast ONE HOUR after the flush and parts replacement.

Becareful of the reed valves on the compressor and refill the system SLOWLY!!!! Rapid refilling can bend or break the valves.

LASTLY read the instructions and tool requirements on the "kit" you buy PRIOR to beginning the job.

I am ASE Certified and have converted many cars. These tips are from practical experience.

You need an ac licence to do this. I would suggest you have it done by a certified shop. Converting to 134a is ok but the system was designed to work with R12. Your car does not have an expansion valve. Depending on the compressor you have and the OT installed in the system. My advice to you is have the system fixed by a certified AC shop and stay with R12.

Yes stay R12. The system was designed for R12. And a lot of fords dont like to be converted. The compressors will fail in a relitively short time. R12 is still available. The only thing is the system must be leak free. You dont want to waste it on a system that leaks. Remember an AC licence is required no matter what freon you use.
