Default Need Fan Part for 1987 Mustang

Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me what part plugs into the radiator fan to make it run. When I bought my stang it was wired in this way: Where the part that is supposed to plug into the radiator would go, there are two 12 gauge wires that are attached, one runs to the fuse box and the other to the neg battery cable. So when I turn my key to the slot before crank, the fan comes on. That one fuse slot where the wire is connected has over time been melting do to the heat from the wire or maybe the wrong gauge wire, or just from being connected in this way.
Thanks for any help!!

Zac

SOMEONE JURY RIGGED THE FAN TO COME ON ALL THE TIME WITH THE KEY. IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT THIS WAY YOU WILL NEED A SLAVE RELAY WIRED INTO THE FAN CIRCUIT.

i'd run a switch. (like i have) and i wouldnt run out of the fuse box. just draw a hot from somewhere (battery, solenoid etc.) and go to the switch and back to the fan. its as simple as that. and just watch your temp. you should never have to turn it on unless your sitting.

also noted it stays on all the time? that will probably over cool the engine causing bad gas mileage and increased wear on the motor internally.
and i dont think you want either of those.... or you might as well be throwing money out the window going down the freeway.... haha

I never use a switch that is manually controlled. There is to much risk of a screw up. What happened to the original fan circuitry. I am willing to bet there is another trouble their. Any time someone rigs a fan setup it means the car is running to hot. You cant overcool that engine. The only way you can overcool is with a very small stat. I see you live ai AZ that motor will never over cool. If you want to get fancy use a 5 prong relay wired to a coolant sensor. This way you can run all your heavy loads through a relay and not burn up the wires.

sorry didnt see that he was in arizona. that does make a difference. i havent screwed up yet. with aftermarket manual gauges to get the exact temp. i haven't have one problem. i had more of a problem with all the electronic bull****. and as i stated earlier you should never have to use the fan unless sitting still at a stoplight.

Hi 4220 if you are a young guy and i am going to assume you are. You better get used to electronics. And you better learn how to read and trouble shoot with scan tools. When i was young the old guys hated disc bekes. They also used to remove the electronic ignition systems and install the old school point dizzys. Electronics is the easy part. Getting old like me is the hard part. PEACE Tom

It isn't uncommon that the fan controllers burn up over time. It was a part doomed to fail on paper, muchless actual operation.

Get an aftermarket controller that is designed to handle the load.

SPAL brand controllers can be mounted under the hood, use the factory sensor in the lower intake, and you can program it for the temp you want to have it operate. No more factory failed parts, no jury rigging, no need for having a fire extinguisher handy for those pesky electrical fires.
(sounds like a Billy Maze commercial, huh?)

i dont have a problem with electronic stuff and i know how to use a scan tool very well. i just prefer to do it on my own because i know it will get done then. yeah im 17 but ive been around cars since i was knee high to a ducks a**. haha. and its the point that if you look at these new cars now a days, electronics is doing everything for them. BMW for example you put the car in reverse and the side mirrors point down so you can see how to back up! is it that hard to turn you head around? thats my honest opinion on electronics.

haha thats a good one NAVY.

You mentioned the fan shouldn't have to come on unless your sitting. I don't know if the fact that i'm in Arizona makes a difference, but there have been times when the fan stopped working and I didn't know it, and the temp would run super hot, even while I'm driving. And of course when I would come to a stop it would totaly overheat.
I'm thinkin this may not be the original fan to the car. I'll have to look at another stang and see.

Thanks for your reply

Thanks guys for all your help. As I stated before, this fan may not be the original fan for the car. But I think I'm done with the rigging process. I'll go and by another fan, if I find out this is not the original.

Thanks again for all the responses

Zac

Yes that will have a big difference on that with you living I Arizona. Where I'm on the east coast our hottest days are cool to you. That's why I stated " only when sitting still" haha
