Default Brake Lights Aren't Working! Sigh...

Once again; issues with the 2.3L Mustang.

This time its the Brake Lights; I got a "fix-it" ticket for having my brake lights out. Now the 3rd one in the middle works, but the two on the outsides don't work.

Today I changed the Brake Light Switch, and I know that the bulbs are working because when I arm or disarm my alarm, they are lit up.

So, any ideas as to what the issue could be?

Thanks

Well, your alarm might be wired outside of the main harness. More directly.

You could just have bad wiring from the brake to the switch.

The only thing that boggles me is that your center light works.

Well from what I have read from other sources; the center light is not connected to the other lights, its on its own source and the two other lights are connected together. Course this could be false info; but thats what I've come across so far.

It is very strange though; all other lights appear to be working fine, and these brake lights were working about a month ago or so.

As for the bad wiring idea; now is it simply just 2 wires (battery/ground) that goes from under dash to rear of car or is it more complex than that?

Another quick question, does your cruise control or hazards work?

Hazards I know work, but I haven't tried the cruise control for years (LA=Traffic 24/7) lol

its cool it was pretty much an irrelevant question. I misread my book lol.

Anyway from what I can see is there are two lamps on either side. there is one relay for the left stop light, and one relay for the right. Now, I presume that these relays join together at one more relay which in turn goes to the harness where the brake switch splices in.

Could have a relay all screwey.

Hmmm, alright well how do I go about replacing these relays?

Where are they located and do you think they are available at a local Autozone?

No relays in that circuit. Check the voltage on the brake light switch with a test lamp. Is it their? If not find out why its not their. Does all the other rear lights work?? Signals dims 4 ways?? Does your car have amber signals?? Or combo signals? Check all the fuses. If your car has combo signals they run through the signal light switch. That is where they are transitioned. Post back with info and i will try to talk you through it. TOM

Alright; I replaced the brake light switch a few years ago (because I had to press on the brakes really hard for the lights to come on). The brake lights have been working ever since, until recently.

So, I bought a used brake light switch on eBay, claims to have been from a 92 Mustang GT and worked. I installed it yesterday, with hopes of it solving the issue, but it didn't.

Everything else works; turn signals, hazards, headlights, reverse lights, amber lights. I even have tail lights turn on when I turn on my headlights. All of the fuses are good; I checked every single one of them as well.

I don't have a voltage tester; however I do have current running through the wire that connects to the brake light switch. (tested with a paper clip).

So I figured it could possibly be some kind of relay; however I haven't been able to find anything on the net about brake light relays nor have I been able to find it on my car.

Does the signal lights work in the back? And are your brake lights a seperate set of bulbs? Did you check the bulbs and are they the correct ones? I think that car uses a different set of lights for signal and brake. Did you check for battery at the brake light switch on both terminals with the brakes applied???

Signals work (both left and right). Brakes are separate bulbs from the signals, but they do work because when I turn my headlights on, the tail lights are on and when I arm or disarm my alarm, the tail lights flash on. (Also, I haven't changed the brake light bulbs - I believe they are still factory bulbs. Nevertheless, the have been working with no issues for years).

Now I'm not quite sure I understand the last question, about the battery at the brake light switch. Are you asking if there is current going through the wires and harness? If so, yes there is an electric current.
