Default 1985 Mustang 2.3L with intermittent knocks

I have a 1985 Mustang 2.3L with a 4 spd and intermittent knocks. The knocking doesn't seem to start until about 1500 rpm. It happens in neutral and when switching from on gear to another. Could it be internal to the engine or tranny or maybe the pilot bearing? This is my first Ford and Mustang.

Any info will be very appreciated,
JR

In neutral with the clutch in or out?

Are there any other symptoms or performance issues?

Where is the knock coming from specifically. Don't say "somewhere in the engine compartment" Find out where it's coming from.

That's the thing, it is very hard to tell where it is coming from. I used a piece of fuel line, one end at my ear, the other at various points around the engine. (valve cover, belt accessories and different areas of the block) I just didn't go under the car because I don't have my jackstands at the moment.

This sucks,

Sometimes it might die or act like it wants to when coming to a stop. When going uphill, if I give it enough gas to keep the same speed or accelerate, it will do it or it might just be pinging(the windows were down, 102* heat, and it was hard to hear). I opened the valvecover to see if I could see something obvious, but everything appeared fine.

sounds like the release bearing, get it figured out quick cause if it comes apart your going to have a real bad day.

The guy I bought the car from, in his ad, described it as having a new ignition system, clutch and plugs. If it isn't the throwout bearing, does anyone else have any ideas? I'm going to take it to my brother's to crawl under it to see if we can localize the problem.

Okay so normally when you put in a new clutch, it comes as a kit, with a clutch, release bearing, pilot bearing and pressure plate. So the release bearing should be new... did the guy say it was a kit or just the clutch alone?

cyl 2=~135
cyl 3=~120

this could actually could be bottom end bearings, when you put the clutch in the crank is moving in and out, could you videotape the car so we could hear the noise?
