How do I test for vacuum leaks, and check solenoids
I am trying to check my car for a vacuum leak. What do I need and how do I test? Also how do you test solenoids to see if they are working? My car is a 89 2.3L mustang. My codes are 83 and 31, both egr related. Do no what to do. Either fix it or burn it. Thanks
get a spray bottle filled with water or a can of WD40 start it. start spraying at the lowest point on the intake manifold, keep spraying working your way inward or up to the carb/ throttle body. spray everywhere you see vacuum lines and the intake flange and the vacuum line to the egr valve especially. if you hit a leak you will hear a change in the idle speed either sudden increase or decrease or even rough idle
The quickest and easiest is to get a can of carb cleaner. Start your engine and open your hood. Spray some carb cleaner around the areas that you think there's a leak, then spread out to the other areas. When it finds a leak, the engine will rev up. And depending on how bad the leak is, you'll hear it suck air in.
Don't soak the vacuum lines or engine. Just spray about a foot or a little less away.

How's that engine running with all the water it sucked in? Is your engine an H20 or something? Last I heard, water in the engine is not very good. But, different strokes for different folks.
I guess I was not clear. do not spray directly into throttle body airhorn. only around it on the base flange. to thoroughly check it you must spray. Unrelated And by the way, an old trick for carbon deposits is POURING a cup of water in the intake.
If that does not work and the carb clean and watter spray is a good way. You can bring it to a shop and hook it to a smoke machine. That will find the leak in two seconds
