Default 1986 Mustang Still Getting Bad Gas Milleage

i have an 86 mustang that has an 88 turbo coupe motor in it. it has a c3 transmission with new 3.73 gears.. sounds okay right(i know. should have a 5 speed but i like my little c3).. only problem is im getting about 200km per tank. 45$ canadian to fill up. i relize its only got 3 speeds but i should be getting atleast 300km? shouldnt i?

things ive checked. and stuff...

no, its not running rich. checked
and no i dont drive it hard..i kept the rpm down this tank

anyone have any ideas

if someone has a turbo mustang and could tell me what they get on a tank that would be great..thanks a mill

just the rear end to 3.73,s...and yes, i get a little better...im glad you talked me into the 3.73's anyways, cause man does it pull hard!.. do you know anything about water injection tom? maybe even a hydrogen kit? cause then i could get better gas milleage and get more boost..

its really not that big of a deal, i can pay for the gas.. it just kinda chokes me that a 5.0 gets better gas milleage..

if you could throw out some suggestion tom that would be great.. maybe even throw some link up if you could.

Thanks alot dude!

here are some links ive been looking at:

AquaTune.com - AquaTune Water Injection Systems

AEM - Water / Methanol Injection Kit

if you want to keep your car pulling hard and getting good gas mileage, i would sugguest changing the rear end gears to 3.55s. It will still pull hard and drop the rpms down 200 to 300 less then what your running now.

there is something seriously wrong with that engine or transmission, with 15 gallons you go 120 miles? 8 MPG is what a hummer would get, you should easily go 300 miles or 500km...the gearing is the least of your worries

OK this is simple. you have a 3 speed tranny with no OD or LOCKUP. In high gear you are spinning way to high to get good fuel milage. Either go for a 5 speeder or install an OD tranny with lockup. Changing to a 3.5 final will do nothing for your gas milage. Your tranny is one to one in final gear and you are loosing 400 RPM without a lockup converter. Watter injection is a hot setup. I use it in all ny builds. It works great. I make my own systems but the ones you posted are OK. Go for the watter injection it works great.

okay.. i think im going to keep my transmission for now.. i think i am going to use water injection... does it make a noticable difference in fuel milleage?. i also heard the aem one gives you some hp aswell? im just going to use water in it.. no methonal.. let me know tom..thanks

and thanks to all you other guys.. im stuck with my c3 because apperently the c4 is electronic, and it wont work with my computer.. its kindof a real mess.. i cant swap to a 5 speed either because the rpm's spike in nuetral and park... so , if id push a clutch in.... you get the point.. all of this is due to my car being carberated before the swap.. they had to skip some wires to get the dash readouts work..i also cant get a reading out of the computer to tell me whats wrong... its kindof a mess, but it gets me from a to b,and it is pretty reliable..

i just hate messing with the electronics, wire , computer, etc.. so thats why i want 2 keep my c3..

just trying to find other alternatives for better milleage..

I have to disagree with the trans lockup idea, even if you are driving at 1:1 you wouldn't get 8MPG unless you drove 120mph everywhere you went...cars for years had no overdrive and they got 20mpg easily...

you may be running really really rich, there may be a problem with the injectors or the 02 sensors are not working or hooked up, have you had the motor put on a computer?...you should easily get 20mpg (500km/tank) with a 4cylinder engine..shoot everyone with a V8 does...forget the water injection for now and fix the root problem, whatever it is...

the computer doesnt give readings because of the setting, and its not really rich... maybe it could be the injectors. the 02 sensor is brand new.

the O2 sensor may not be reading correctly, can you get a local tuner to put a handheld on the car to take some real time readings? It would do a world of good, or eventually you may need to see a good local Ford dealer or mechanic...at what your wasting on gas it should be affordable to get it fixed
