Yes, a 5.0 will work but you need a reducer on the TB end that'll bring it from 3" to 2" or so.(whatever the opening is on the TB opening.) If you look hard enough you'll find one for a 2.3l, but it looks like the 5.0 with that reducer I mentioned.
The best muffler is up to what you like for sound and performance. Everyone likes the Flowmasters 40 series. I just got a straight pipe with no cats with the ford muffler and a turndown. Big difference but i'll change the muffler to a Thrush or Cherry Bomb glass pack later.
I disconnected the EGR and not really noticed a difference. Unless your trying to reduce weight, i'd leave it alone. If you decide to delete it, put in a delete plate and leave everything hooked up. It'll be fine.
