Default How do I test the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid

I have an 89 2.3 mustang. I am getting codes 31 and 83. EGR regulator solenoid and EGR control solenoid. I think these are the solenoids on the passenger side shock tower? THe explanation for the codes say open circuit and circuit problems. How do I check to see if they are working and or getting voltage? What is the correct voltage? I checked the EGR position sensor and it had 5 volts. Could I just have a vacuum leak? Car runs bout a minute then shuts off. The 31 and 83 code are the only ones that show on the reader. PLease help I need to get this thing running. Thanks

Try this site. I think pages around 7 and 8 maybe a few more may help. http://rothfam.com/svo/reference/sensors.pdf

Chris Roth (EEC tuning God!) scanned them from the 2nd book on this list. That book actually nursed me into the FI world, as I was used to dealing with carbed motors. Good writing and very easy to learn by reading this. It also comes with EEC schematics for the years referenced.

I have the first book on that list. I can't count the number of light bulbs that lit up in my head while reading that book. So many questions answered, and things explained that actually made sense.

Thanks for the info. It tells me exactly what I wanted to know. One other question which might be dumb. They talk about using a 12 volt source to test solenoids. WHat is the best way? Is hooking two wires to the battery a good idea? Thanks
