Hey guys, I'm thinking about doing a 4 speed to T5 swap. Is there anything I need to be aware of when doing this swap? The T5 would be from another 2.3L so bell housing should bolt up to my current 2.3L. What about drive shaft, pilot bushing, clutch cable, tach pickup, etc? Any advice?
I should mention it's a 1980 body, but I don't think all the components are from that year - not sure if that makes a difference or not.
No problem, not much offense taken. I'm a noob here so I'm sure I deserve a little breaking-in.
I have done searches. To clarify - I am not looking to replace an auto trans - I currently have a manual 4-speed that I want to replace with a manual 5 speed. I haven't seen any info out there that compares the two of those - just auto to manual swaps, which would be quite a bit different that what I am looking to do.
Yes, I am sure it is out there somewhere but haven't entered in the proper search terms so far... so any help on that, or the actual information directly would be appreciated!
Good, I feel vindicated! (aside from my not-clear subject and initial post - see the other thread I have started for discussion on what type of 4-speed trans I have - I still am not sure).
It's possible it's never been done before (if you have a manual, probably not worth the trouble to go from 4-5 speeds). My problem is that I road race and I think the four speed gear ratios are putting me at a disadvantage. Been looking on CL for a 5-speed and am wondering what else I need to take into account when I find one and do the swap...
On my old '79 I had a SROD 4 speed. It's been awhile but as I recall it's a pretty straight forward swap. I think that the foureyedpride forums had a write up on what all was required for the swap. I seem to recall there being some differences in the way the bell housings bolted up, but other then that it was pretty much plug and play.
The only thing you have to worry about is the pilot bearing. The 5.0 t 5 has a large diameter nose and the 2.3 is smaller. For road racing the close ratio 4 speeder is better. The 5 speed is a wide ratio and wider spaced gears. The OD feature is useless on road racing. The road guys always shift up and down to hit the turns. The close ratio 4 speeder is the way to go. Other than that the 5 speed is the ticket. What is the ratio of your 4 speeder?????
