1991 Mustang 2.3 auto tranny grinds between 3rd and OD What could be the problem?
Hi everyone My 2.3 tranny is having some really bad issues latley. It's the automatic transmission it is acting up (again) The tranny went out on the car a few months ago so I had it rebuilt (2 shops and 4 months later) now its acting up again it has a slight leak which i monitor but now the tranny grinds and slips down from OD to 3rd so i have to drive without OD so as not to make this noise The shop said it needed a tune up which was done and they insist that it works fine... but it grinds slips down and the whole shifter will "click" when i hit larger bumps in the road whats going on? (I'm taking the car back in but I need to be able to argue with this A$$**** i know the fluids are ok and i have tried every "stop leak fluid" no avail)
I agree. Take it back. May want to get second opion from another shop before taking it to them and get in writing just in case things get nasty. Good Luck Maurice
Any time an auto makes noize its real bad. The only problem is you added chemicals to the tranny. Never tell the guy you did that it will void the warranty. That trans is doomed if you dont get it fixeed. If th guy wont fix it have him put it in writing that the trans is OK then run the snot out of it till it fails and it will??
hey tom. do you think it could be mis-adjusted linkage from the shifter to the trans? i know mine is a tad off and it doesn't wanna go into park on the first try sometimes. (too lazy to crawl under her and adjust it haha)
you think it could be kicking when it goes from 3rd to OD or the selector getting stuck between the two and thats causing the grinding?
just my .02¢ worth a look dont you think?

Hi 4220 thats a good point. I am not the greatest on AUTOS. Our shop is basically an engine building facility. That could be the problem. If so then why didn't the tranny guy adjust it?? You are right though a mis adjusted gear selector can cause havic like you explained. Good thought worth checking. DUDE get under your car and adjust that linkage. You dont want to loose that box for a linkage adjustment problem. Be good TOM
Thanks for the feedback I know it's a crappy little drivetrian but I've already had the problem "fixed" by 2 different shops and now I'm just pissed off especially after having it rebuilt (coulda bought a whole different 2.3 for that price) I will be looking into how to adjust the linkage thanks again
yeah i need to do it. haha. theres that fine line between want and need yeah that was just my first thought as compared to tearing and dropping the trans for nothing.
yeah im trying to stay outta trouble. lol

One more strange occurance has happened I recently replaced the sparks and wires and now the car idles rough i have a replacement o2 sensor but i havent got it in yet but what would that make the car idle any better since is pretty much just an emissions thing? (trying to pass aircare for one more year out of it...) also before the little tune up the idle rpm dropped from 1000 to 600... agh so much wrong with my poor car
The idle should be about 700-800rpm... and the O2 sensor has more to do with just emmisions than you think. If you have the new sensor, just put it in.
