Default 1984 SVO with a blown motor.

alright guys my SVO has a blown motor (what the mechanic told me) so he told me I had to rebuild it n that he would do it for $1,200. I think thats a lot of $$ for that job.

At this point I dont know if I should get it rebuilt or if I can just replace the 2.3 L with 2.5 L from like a Ranger or something? I wonder if that would be cheaper and a better option? what do u guys think?

If the 2.5 L would fit, which one do I have to get (year/model) and would I have to make any mods or what exactly would I need to do to pull the swap off?

Hey,

If you want your car to be worth anything, keep the original engine. You can rebuild the engine yourself for way cheaper.

Dude for 1200.00 bucks thats cheap and i dont think its a total rebuild. He may be talking a rering and cleanup but at 1200.00 bucks its a marginal fix at best. If you dont keep that car 100% original it is a 500 dollar mustang. Keep the original motor. Any ranger motor will be NG for that car anyway. The turbo motor is completely different. Forged pistons drain for the turbe ETC.

I know a dude in LA and asked him if he wanted to look at it for you. He has like...5 SVOs. Let me see if he wants to tackle it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I do want to keep my same motor for that same reason but was just throwing options out there.

Also, I guess I find it expensive cuz I usually get motors rebuilt for $500-$600 a pop and then my pops n me just do all the work from there. but maybe the mech is only doin what "RENZO" said. point being is that i should keep my same engine and leave original.

thanks again guys.

This is not your time to go cheap, the machine shop bill alone could be $1200, you need to have it rebored and align honed, from there you need new rings at a minimum and then you'll need to have the head freshened...the gasket set, new water pump and associated small items will put this well over $1200, of course no need putting a rebuilt engine in without rebuilding the turbo, right? I'd estimate you'll spend more like $4-5000 if you want it done right...trust me do it right the first time and you'll never regret it.

What does he mean by BLOWN motor? Why did you bring it into him? What were the symptoms? I would ask questions and get some more information before taking his word.

Well what i mean by "blown" is that he told me that the engine was no good anymore. he said he wasnt sure if it was the block or the head that needed to be rebuilt but he said he would find out which it was if not both and rebuilt it for that price.

The car would struggle alot to turn over. when it would eventually turn on it would struggle to maintain untill several tries, then it would heavily smoke blue and smell a lot like gas. when the car was on i tried to take it out for a test run but it would not pass 2nd gear (speed wise) and the rpm's would just shoot up (turbo would spool up but got nowhere) but the car would not move and just continue throwing out more and more blue smoke.

hope that answers some of your questions "evintho"
